85 percent of eligible voters in South Ethiopia got registered for national elections
Hawassa, February 8, 2010 (Hawassa) - More than 85 percent of electorates in South Ethiopia Peoples’ State have got registered to cast votes in the coming national elections, State’s Election Coordinating Office with the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) disclosed.

Office head, Abrham Gedebo told ENA that more than 5.02 million voters have been registered so far at the various polling stations established across the 13 zones and 8 special woredas of the regional government.

Some 2.3 million of the registered voters are women, according to the head.

Especially, the number of voters registered in Gurgi and Halaba Special Woredas exceeded the set target by 3 percent, he said, adding the percentage of registered voters in the Dawro, Siltie, South Omo, Gedio, and Amaro constituencies of the state has reached 96.9 percent.

Meanwhile, he said, 13 contesting political parties in the region have fielded 1,134 candidates for the upcoming national elections.

He said the South Ethiopia Peoples Democratic Movement (SEPDM) fielded 464 candidates for the seats of federal and regional councils.
